This variant of the classic city tour also includes a visit to the baroque church of St. Peter. The Würzburg master builder Balthasar Neumann took over the planning and construction management, who at the behest of the Prince-Bishop Cardinal Damian Hugo von Schönborn had this imposing structure built on the former site of the cemetery. “He began to build the old St. Peters parish church based on the model of the Peters church in Rome,” says Bruchsal chronicler Thierry. A crypt was created under the church, which served as a burial place for Schönborn and the subsequent bishops of Speyer. Fortunately, the baroque church of St. Peter survived the terrible bombing of March 1, 1945 without damage and therefore still impresses its visitors today as a baroque masterpiece with the contemporary attitude to life of yesteryear.

For centuries women have been misjudged and disadvantaged. Thus, since the middle of the 19th century, they have made it their task to fight for equality for women. Since the 1970s, there has also been a conscious focus on women’s history, which the male gaze had too often overlooked. This is how a new way of looking at history comes into being, another bit of an approach to what was.

A tour through the city center makes women’s history visible.

The smallest museum in Baden-Württemberg – until someone says otherwise.

In 2013 the idea was born to set up a small museum for Count Kuno, the symbolic figure of the Bruchsal Carnival. Just one year later, the first visitors could be welcomed in the old vineyard cottage on the Andreasstaffel. On display are exhibits that are associated with Count Kuno. Find out interesting and new things from the Count and the “Brusler” carnival and get to know the history of Bruchsal from a foolish point of view.

The Great Carnival Society Bruchsal 1879 e. V. looks forward to your visit. As I said: It’s a slightly different museum; bring a sense of humor and don’t take everything that has been said at face value!

After the almost complete destruction in March 1945, the main building with its ballrooms was rebuilt true to the original by 1991. With the reopening of the prince-bishop’s apartments on the first floor in spring 2017, the reconstruction will be completed. It connects historic cities and squares in the southwest of the republic and is one of the tourist streets that run through Bruchsal. Bruchsal played a role that should not be neglected during the freedom and democracy movements in the mid-19th century. Farmer leader Joß Fritz and his Bundschuh movement or the revolutionary Friedrich Hecker worked in the region. The importance of Bruchsal at that time was primarily in the penal system. The Baden revolutionaries were among the first inmates of the new “Grand Ducal Male Penitentiary”, which practiced a modern, reform-oriented penal system with its consistent solitary confinement. Walk with us in the footsteps of the freedom movement.

That in 1988 by the Diocesan Caritas Association Freiburg in the technical school for social pedagogy
The museum opened in 2003 was taken over by the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus Gengenbach. It uses exhibits to show the development and history of the kindergarten, the crèche, the after-school care center and the training to become an educator.
The development of the kindergarten is clearly explained, in particular using the example of the two pedagogues Friedrich Fröbel (1782 – 1852) with the “toys” and the first systematic construction kit and Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952), who helped the child to be independent through the didactic material she developed wanted to stimulate. The extensive commitment of the nuns is documented, right up to the pre-school reform of the seventies. Playground equipment and furnishings show the framework conditions of earlier times.

The new Otto Oppenheimer memorial in Bruchsal, called “The Ship of Fools”, clearly needs to be explained. Too much stories and history are interwoven in it for the casual observer to easily decipher them. The Bruchsal journalist and author Rainer Kaufmann, who is already conducting the alternative city tour “Vergessenes Bruchsal” for the tourist information office, has dealt intensively with all the backgrounds to this memorial and offers this in a compact tour of the memorial. The tour lasts a maximum of one hour and can be booked at any time by appointment.
